Falling Upward (Book study with Pastor Cyndi)

  • McKendree United Methodist Church 1570 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road Lawrenceville, GA, 30043 United States (map)

Are you ready to explore deeper dimensions of life and spirituality? Join Pastor Cyndi for a dynamic and enriching discussion on Richard Rohr’s acclaimed book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life.

Richard Rohr draws on scripture and the wisdom of thinkers like Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung to explore how our spiritual lives evolve over time. In the first stage of life, we’re focused on building a framework: establishing a career, forming relationships, and shaping our identity. But it often takes a "fall" or a crisis to shift from merely constructing this framework to filling it with deeper meaning.

These crises can lead us to question everything we thought we knew about living a spiritual life. The second half of life is marked by a filled framework—one that’s enriched with trust in God, surrender, joy, and a newfound lightness. In this stage, you might find yourself letting go of pain, judgments, and even the need to judge. You might know someone in this second stage and think, “I want to be like them when I grow up.”

Rohr’s book speaks to those in both stages. For those in the first stage, it’s about building a framework that supports future spiritual growth. For others, we explore how to avoid getting stuck in the first stage and what moves us forward spiritually.

This discussion invites you to explore these questions and more, as we help one another explore what it means to grow spiritually.

The first class is August 21. Please read Chapter 1 for the class.
